The idea of a simple backstage tour eventually became the backbone concept for one of the most successful amusement park chains in the world, Universal Parks and Resorts. Designed to go toe-to-toe against Disney for a piece of the Orlando tourism market, Universal Studios Theme Park in Florida opened its gates 1990. Now home to more than 50 rides and attractions, Universal Studios in Florida hosts close to 6 million guests each year.
A major expansion in 1999 added Islands of Adventure theme park, Portofino Bay Hotel, and the CityWalk nighttime entertainment district to the Universal family. In 2002, The Hard Rock Hotel and Royal Pacific Hotel completed the massive project. With those additions, Universal Studios in Florida was officially giving Disney a run for their money and became a vacation destination unto itself.
